The Upcoming Myth & Magic Starter Kit

We here at NHG are poised to set a massive precedent in old-school gaming. We are soon releasing the most ambitious preview of a roleplaying game EVER!

3 books …. yup, you read that …. 3 books! All highlighting the awesomeness that will be the full release of the Myth & Magic Fantasy Roleplaying Game.

What will you get when you buy the Starter Kit?

1) The Player’s Starter Guide – A huge introduction to Myth & Magic. All of the races, most of the classes, and the most-essential rules to take your hero from the upstart trenches of Level 1 to the renown of Level 10.

2) The Game Master’s Starter Guide – GMs get a ton of monsters, magic items, traps, poisons, diseases and advice to challenge their entire gaming table! We brought it all back.. and we added some twists and turns that keep the salted veterans guessing! This very well may be the greatest GM primer to any RPG … ever!

3) The Road to Adventure – The first Myth & Magic module! Pit your starting Myth & Magic characters against a plot to return an evil that must remain entrapped. We’re talking kobold enemies, kobold allies, possessor demons, turncoats, bride hostages, magical relics and stirges the size of a Winnebago. It all starts on The Road to Adventure…

The Starter Kit is vast, hundreds and hundreds of pages of introductory material that will whet your appetite for the full release of Myth & Magic. The entire three-book compilation will be $10.00 in pdf at all of your favorite e-book vendors. And, that’s not all…

Print! A very limited print run (about 250 copies) of the Starter Kit books will be available for collectors. We’re still ironing this out, but details are coming, my friends – details are on the way.

Myth & Magic is an expansion  to the 2nd Edition of the World’s Most Popular Roleplaying Game. Perfectly maintaining the original tone and atmosphere, yet cleaning up the rules and modifying some aspects with new and improved mechanics, Myth & Magic feels more like an update to the original rules than an entirely different edition.  We here at NHG started our gaming careers in the 1989 rules. We have tremendous love for that edition and this love is evident in the quality of the Myth & Magic experience. For anyone who has played 2E and enjoyed the countless avenues a good story and some good friends can take in a campaign, you will love Myth & Magic. For anyone who missed the 2E Experience, Myth & Magic is a must play. The 2E Experience is unique and Myth & Magic does a great job of preserving the experience while providing a new set of rules.

Stay tuned for more information on the full release of the most anticipated old-school roleplaying game to date – Myth & Magic!

“Myth & Magic”

October 11, 2011: Someone notified New Haven Games today that a U.S. based company published a fantasy roleplaying game in 2006 entitled, “Myth & Magic”.

We here at NHG take things like this VERY seriously. We have people working on this right now.

Although we did not uncover any public use of the title before we published in’10, we are not simply dismissing the claim. Things will be on hold until our lawyers sort this out.

We’ve already invested two years worth of money and time building the brand of Myth & Magic. We will not print up a few thousand copies to find ourselves in litigation. But, we will also not simply give up the fruits of that labor either.

Here is the page to our forum with the post. We will keep you updated via the forum or press releases.

October 12, 2001: In response to a potential trademark and copyright claim made by Mark Talley of 190 Games, all downloads of the Player’s Starter Guide, Game Master’s Starter Guide and web updates and errata have been removed. We apologize sincerely, especially in light of our updated release, but hope you understand.

October 26, 2011: We’re happy to report that the dispute over the name, Myth & Magic, is over. NHG will resume the use of the name and our attention is re-focused on the release of the Starter Kit shortly. We thank all of our members and online supporters of the game for their well-wishes and staunch defense of the game. We also thank Mark Talley for his professionalism and endearment to our hobby.

What Gamers are Saying About Myth & Magic

Velvetlinedbox says here on July 17th: “…Then when they got out of [Hell] and took the portal … [it was] amazing to see the sense of wonder on my players face[s]… The roles worked really well. The ability for the wizard to relearn spells was really popular. The proficiency system went smoothly. We had a blast. I am really looking forward to the next game and learning the new changes.”

The Myth & Magic RPG open playtest has begun!

The 148 page Player’s Starter Guide, which takes you to 10th-Level, is available now to members only as a FREE DOWNLOAD HERE. The Player’s Starter Guide is Book 1 of the Revised Starter Kit. The Revised Starter Kit is the beta version of the playtester’s rules. The Player’s Starter Guide  incorporates the first round of errata and suggestions from the Myth & Magic community over the last few months.

The 99 page Game Master’s Starter Guide is also available as a FREE DOWNLOAD HERE to all members. It contains advice, rules, monsters, magic items and hazards for low to mid-level play. This book really kicks off the entire playtest and brings to light the quality we strive for.

What To Expect: The first release of the playtest rules was entitled the Starter Kit (now referred to as the Classic Kit). It was very close to the 2nd Edition rules set. In fact, one could argue that the Classic Kit was a “clone” of that system. While some changes were made to the core of 2nd Edition and some expansions took place, the Classic Kit was intended to provide a system that was drawn from the original rules set. This allowed the community to work with these rules under the OGL and help build upon them.

We intended Myth & Magic to progress as a game, while still remaining quite true to its progenitor. Over the last several months, we have compiled thousands of forum posts that suggested changes and modifications from our playtesters. We have also spoke about some of the changes envisioned by the developers. So, while we all worked from the Classic Kit, the next stage of the playtest, The Player’s Guide,  incorporates changes that substantially advance Myth & Magic and provide a welcomed update to the rules it was inspired by.

There has been much debate over whether Myth & Magic is a clone, per se. (And, I can’t blame the debaters.) The Classic Kit was intended to be similar to what gamers have come to know as clones. But, the debates will likely stop when you read the Player’s Starter Guide. The major goal of Myth & Magic and the open playtest is to advance and expand upon the original rules to create a game system that serves as a perfect bridge between classic and modern gaming styles.

Instead of working backward with the 3.0 version of the game rules, we decided to start with the 2nd Edition rules and work forward.

“Why 2nd Edition?” That’s a very good question and one that we field often from members of our community that started gaming in post 3.x. The first reason is the shear volume of gamers. I would wager that there are more gamers actively playing today that started in 2nd Edition than those starting in all the other editions of the game … combined. That leads to a huge amount of familiarity and nostalgic value. The second reason is the shear volume of existing material. It’s all still quite available and it’s all quite good. No edition better presented campaign settings and game flavor. That leads to an opportunity to play what you have, in pure form, but with slicker mechanics. Just think of revisiting one of your favorite campaigns and reliving the flavor and tone of the setting. The third reason is the need to reinvigorate a style of gaming that relies heavily on imagination and storytelling. Sure, we could have written an entirely new game system to accomplish this; but, truth be told, it would have languished in anonymity. The 2nd Edition is the perfect vehicle to reintroduce free form fantasy gaming.

The Player’s Starter Guide: This is the second installment of the playtesters guide and it incorporates the suggestions of our gaming community over the past few months. The changes are significant:

  • Core Mechanic: The Attack vs. Armor Class mechanic was updated to a Base Attack Bonus structure similar to the system used in 3.x and Castles & Crusades (trademark property of Troll Lord Games).
  • Races: All the races are presented.
  • Classes: Seven classes are included: fighter, ranger, mage, specialist wizard, cleric, thief and bard. The class entries include all stats for Levels 1 through 10.
  • Proficiencies: All non-weapon proficiencies have been detailed into skills. New elite class proficiencies, or class talents, have been included for all classes. A new skill resolution system, called “the BASE20 system”, is introduced which allows the GM to use a simple ladder of complexities to gauge how difficult a task is. (This is one of the biggest expansions.)
  • Combat: Some slicker and easier mechanics are presented for hand-to-hand fighting, mounted combat and other specialized forms of combat.
  • Spells: All spells, some entirely new, of Levels 1 – 5 are included.
  • More: There is more, but you’ll need to see it yourself.

Myth & Magic Thus Far: Responses and reviews of the game have been very positive and the community is growing daily. There is a special members only forum that includes regular updates to the classes and other special notifications. So, please sign up to the forums to get the latest information and to discuss the development of the game.

The Player’s Starter Guide AND Game Master’s Starter Guide are available now. These two tomes of adventure provide all that is necessary to play adventures through the first ten levels. They are only available to members of the forum, so please sign up now.
